Kirkcaldy Canoe Club held their Annual General Meeting and presentation of awards on Friday 10th February in Kinghorn Community Centre. After the official business of summarising the 2011 season, discussing club issues and selecting a new committee for 2012 was complete, the awards for 2011 were presented.
First trophy of the evening was awarded to Sylvia Hadley for Swimmer of the Year. This is presented to the paddler with the most memorable swims throughout the year. This year however was slightly different as, not only did Sylvia win this accolade, she was also later presented with Most Improved Senior Paddler of the season……a sign of true determination.
The Most Improved Junior Paddler was awarded to Thomas Wibberleywho was recognised by the Club’s committee for the significant improvement he has shown over the course of the season.
The Club’s Paddler of the Year for 2011 was Rachel Syme. Rachel has not only graduated to become a full member the Scottish National Development Squad in 2011 but also returned from the British Championships at Nottingham in September with two gold medals andone silver from crew boat successes with other Scottish paddlers. Rachel is also one of the four nominees for the Kirkcaldy & Central Fife Sports Council Sports Personality of the Year 2011 recently seen in the Fife Free Press.
The David H. Chalmers Trophy, which is given in recognition of an outstanding performance in the year, was awarded to Charlie Snedden and Blair Henderson for their superb 2nd place at the Hasler Marathon Championships held at Bedford in early October where they competed in a K2 kayak against a considerable field of extremely competent paddlers from across the UK.
Brick of the Year, which is awarded to a member or friend of the Club who has gone that extra mile for the success of the club, was presented to Shane McKeown in appreciation of his regular journeys down from Cupar to Kinghorn Loch in order to provide safety boat cover for the paddlers throughout the season.
With us now heading quickly towards Spring, the Club will be back on Kinghorn Loch on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6pm from 27 March 2012. New paddlers are very welcome. Further information is available on the club’s website – www.kirkcaldycanoeclub.co.uk.
