Sprint and marathon kayaking uses specialised equipment, learn more here.

Equipment

The equipment is specialised and designed to be as efficient as possible when racing.

The club has a vast selection of boats and paddles suitable for beginners and intermediates. More experienced paddlers will purchase their own equipment once they have tried paddling and caught the bug.

The paddles used for sprint and marathon paddling vary from the standard flat asymmetric blade which is flat to the more efficient 'wing' paddle. This type of blade is designed for racing and is more efficient because it 'catches' the water better, and does not slip as far as a conventional paddle. They are generally made from carbon fibre, or carbon/kevlar composite. The shaft can either be glass fibre or carbon, which is more rigid. The shaft also often has an adjustable section in the centre so the feather (angle of the blades), and length can be adjusted to suit the paddler or prevailing conditions. The paddle blade size can also vary in size to suit the paddler, where larger blades are used by stronger paddlers, or for shorter sprints.

The picture below shows an example of the types of paddle available.

The boats are unique, and again available in ,any designs. To find out more select the links below to find out more about each boat.
