Lightning Information

Lightning's are a modern class of racing kayak's specifically designed for under 12 year old juniors. There are classes for U12 boys and girls, U10 boys and girls. These kayaks are smaller than traditional boats, and are constructed of plastic so they are more resilient and hard-wearing. They are all built to a standard specification, and only differ in colour!! They come in green, blue, yellow, red, and white.

The Lightning events at sprint regattas are usually run over 100m, 200m, 500m, and 1000m. Marathon events are held on suitable waters, usually over a distance of some 1.5 - 3 miles.

A lightning league is held annually in Scotland where points are awarded at each of the regular regatta's held at Kinghorn, Linlithgow, Cumbernauld, and Strathclyde park.

Kirkcaldy Canoe Club has a fleet of nine Lightning's for junior paddlers.
