The 2017 British Marathon Championships took place on the River Thames near Pangbourne last weekend, with several Scottish crews making the long journey South to challenge the best GB has to offer.

Kirkcaldy Canoe Club provided the class of the field in the O54 Ladies category, Margaret Chapman taking Gold and Ursula Mackintosh taking Silver in K1s, then teaming up to win the K2 class together. They also won Silver in K2 O44 Ladies, while Margaret came 2nd in O44 Ladies K1.

Alan Paterson, again racing for Kirkcaldy, survived the biggest startline of his paddling career (50 boats!) and the portages to come home in 37th in O49 K1.

The second all Kirkcaldy K2 crew of Brian Chapman and Alan Macintosh came 21st in O54 Mens K2, with Alan 24th in the K1 category and Brian 31st.

Kirkcaldy’s Gilbert Speirs had a sensational fight to the line to take second in O59 K1, while Kenny Fraser came through in a close group to claim 6th. The pair (who have a world championship medal to their names) had another fight to the line in their O54 K2 race to take second, with the top 3 together in a photo finish. They also survived 2 very rough and busy portages to take 6th in the O44 catagory, catching and overtaking a crew with less than 500m to the finish.

Kirkcaldy’s own World Champion, Andrew Morton won yet another British Championship in the O69 K1 race, just 1 second ahead of the next boat.

Congratulations to all, excellent racing.

Kirkcaldy Canoe Club paddler, Rachel Syme, has been selected for the British team for the European Under 23 Sprint Regatta from 23-25 June 2017 in  Belgrade, Serbia where she will paddle as a member of the K4 500m crew.

Her selection follows a series of crew boat trials and training camps at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham over the past 2 months culminating in their boat winning the Under 23 British National Championship at the beginning of June.
